Indian type of writing in English started during the period of British rule in India. The pillar which was set by our forefathers has now changed into a mansion where not only we family members reside but also allow all the guests to enter and enjoy the best and unique type of literature. It happened only after constant care, pruning and feeding. Gardeners like Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, R.K.Narayan, Raja Rao – to name a few, took care of the plant tender night and day. In modern times, it is guarded by several writers who are receiving awards and accolades around the world.
Indian English Literature is an honest company to demonstrate the rare jewels of Indian writing in English. From being a singular and exceptional native outbreak, quite gradual of geniuses, Indian Writing ended up being a new form of Indian culture and voice, in which India talks regularly. Indian writers – poets, novelists, essayists and playwrights have contributed considerably and considerably to world literature since the pre-independence era, in recent years we have witnessed a very largeopulence and riches of Indian writing in English on the global market.
English Indian literature has achieved independent status within the framework of world literature. A wide variety of topics are covered in Indian English writing. Although this literature continues to reflect the culture, tradition, social values and even the history of India through the representation of life in India and in Indians who live elsewhere, recent Indian Indian fiction has been trying to express the Indian experience of modern conditions . There are critics and commentators in England and the United States who appreciate Indian novels in English. Professor MK Naik comments: “… one of the most notable gifts of English education for India is prose fiction, because, although India was probably a source of stories, the novel we know today was an import from west”.
India’s considerable contribution to world literature is largely due to the plentifully creative literary works generated by Indian novelists in English adding an uniquebranch to the English literature Family Tree. His works contemplated and deliberated on several issues, such as nationalism, struggle for freedom, social realism, individual conscience and the like. This literary movement was strengthened by the overwhelming production of novelists and stood out as a notable force in world fiction. This was achieved by novelists who sought to prove their internal creative impulses in the English language, which is in fact a foreign language for them. It is to the credit of these novelists that they overcame the obstacles of writing in a foreign language and developed a distinct style for themselves, mastering the intricacies of language and assimilating the tones and flavors of the Indian subcontinent. Raja Rao famously argued in 1938, in the preface to his novel Kanthapura, for using English, but English adapted to Indian conditions:
English is not a foreign language for us. It is the language of our intellectual composition – as Sanskrit or Persian was before – but not of our emotional composition. We are all instinctively bilingual, many of us in our own language and in English. We cannot write like English. We should not. We can only write like Indians. Our method of expression … will someday be as distinct and colorful as the Irish or the Americans.
